Samwell Leather Co. is made up of two friends with a passion for durable and beautiful handmade leather products. It began as a series of conversations around the idea that so many leather products out there are designed to be sold and not used. By that we mean products made from cheap leather, stripped down to their per-unit cost and created with volume in mind instead of quality. These products look good and work well for maybe the first year, but instead of looking better with age, as any leather product should, they start to break and show their age in the worst possible way.
Those early conversations were also about the notion that we could make these things better if we only learned how to. And learn we did. As with everything in life, we’re still learning.
We currently offer about a dozen products, from keychains to leather-wrapped flasks. These items are the result of no small amount of trial and error – just ask anyone who owns one of our first keychains. Everything we sell was first tested by close friends and family, who came back to us weeks later with design notes and feedback on how they could be improved.
And now we’re selling them to you, our future friends, secure in the knowledge that you’ll be satisfied with their functionality, durability and beauty. When you buy something from Samwell Leather Co., you’re not buying a product so much as you’re buying into the idea that attention to detail and a devotion to handmade craftsmanship are the design hallmarks that you yourself would get behind and recommend to the people in your life.
And we don’t throw around the word “handmade” lightly. You won’t find a single machine-made stitch on any one of our products. We hand cut all of the leather and make our own stitch holes with a punch and mallet. We thread our own needles with waxed linen thread and hand set every button snap and rivet. We bevel and burnish our edges by hand, and on and on it goes.
Consequently, you also won’t find any of the sterile symmetry that’s popular in high-end leather work. The characteristics that define our work – the slightly raised stitch line or the small nick that comes from hand-working a piece of leather – are a testament to the fact that our products are handmade by actual, flawed humans. And it’s those imperfections that lend our items a personal quality: nobody else owns the same flask you do, the one with the natural hide scar running across the back.
And so we don’t apply modern techniques to the work we do. Everything we make could more or less be made with the same tools that were popular a century ago. Here’s why we do this: the durability that comes with hand stitching a product is second to none, including fancy Italian sewing machines. The attention to detail that comes with truly making something with your hands could never be achieved in a factory that cranks out hundreds of the same items every day. The end result is one you can tell is handmade, a product with character that you feel blessed to have found and one you can call your own.
